Zawada Family History
Frank and his sons Frank Jr. and Joe during the strike of 1913
During the strike of 1913, Frank Sr. may have continued working in
the mines. His employment record shows dates of service from January,
1896 to September, 1914, then shows service from August, 1919 to
April, 1921.
There's a gap from 1909 to 1919 for actual 'start' and 'stop' periods
of work, but we will assume he was working on and off during that time,
especially because of the fact that he was awarded a bronze medal for
his service in 1916.
Frank's son Joe quit the mines on December 7, 1912, and Joe's brother
Frank Jr. quit the mines on May 8, 1913, two months before the WFM
called a strike.
We do not know what Joe and Frank Jr. did to help out the family during
the period of 1912 - 1914, but after the strike and the tragic events
during the strike had left the community in shambles, it appears that
Frank Jr. went back to work at the mines.
It is interesting to note that from looking at the mining
applications, Joe and Frank Jr. had not worked at the mines at all
during the strike of 1913.
Frank Jr. resumed work at the mines on April 15, 1914 - one week after
the union voted to end the strike.
Were Joe and Frank Jr. union boys?
How was the family personally affected by the strike and the tragic
events that unfolded during the strike?
